The basics of airplane landing lights

When designing aircraft landing lights, there are four key requirements that must be taken into consideration: weight,  current consumption, and light intensity.  The ultimate design would be high output, will electrical consumption, 10 ounces, and last forever.  However, in the real world it is very hard to achieve these perfect conditions.  Light emitting diodes (LED’s) are the new technology which will allow us to get to these near perfect conditions.

The brightness of landing lights are likely the key consideration for most pilots when choosing a landing light product.  HID and halogen lamps are some of the brightest technology that exists, many of which are brighter than LED however they are notorious for in consuming lots of power.  While some of this consumption translates directly to landing light brightness, they generate an intense amount of feet which is capable of melting of lands covers.

Many landing lights include a flashing or wig-wag mode which allows for greater visibility while in flight or on landing approach.  When viewed from the other aircraft this wig wag tendency in the light makes it very easy to identify aircraft that a great distance, adding a large margin of safety.  This is easily achieved with LED technology as well, yet LED landing light systems and LED the strobes do not generate the same heat signature as its competitors.

When comparing aircraft landing lights, you can utilize seat as an indicator of power consumption.  Simply walk up to any aircraft landing light or strobe light that is in and on condition, and hold your hand over the light.  If you feel and incredible amount of heat, or feel you’ll be burned if you touch to lens, rest assured you are consuming in large amount of power.  For Light-Sport Aircraft this can be very hard on alternators and batteries systems.  Many small engines like the ROTAX are unable to generate more than 20 amps at full engine throttle.  Many light systems will easily consume the vast majority of that!
